Students

Earth Sciences

Below are details about the field of study you have chosen to explore, as well as some potential careers.

Overview

The study of the nature, composition and structure of the Earth including its atmosphere and hydrosphere. The main purpose of this narrow field of education is to develop an understanding of the physical properties of the Earth's crust and the characteristics of its soil, landforms, climate, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Course skills

Earth Sciences develops skills in:

  • analysing the structure, composition and evolution of the Earth, including its atmosphere and hydrosphere
  • identifying and classifying crystals, rocks and minerals
  • using geological instruments and field techniques for geological purposes.

Careers

Drillers, Miners and Shot Firers

Drillers, Miners and Shot Firers assemble, position and operate drilling rigs and mining plants, and detonate explosives to extract materials from the earth and demolish structures.

Geologists, Geophysicists and Hydrogeologists

Geologists, Geophysicists and Hydrogeologists study the composition, structure and other physical attributes of the earth, locate and advise on the extraction of minerals, petroleum and ground water, and detect, monitor and forecast seismic, magnetic, electrical, thermal and oceanographic activity.

Science Technicians

Science Technicians perform tests and experiments, and provide technical support functions to assist with research, design, production and teaching in chemistry, earth sciences, life sciences, and physical sciences.

University Lecturers and Tutors

University Lecturers and Tutors prepare and deliver lectures and conduct tutorials in one or more subjects within a prescribed course of study at a university and conduct research in a particular field of knowledge.
